Summer's here finally, and I have had a very busy start to it I have to say! I ended up having 4 gigs this last weekend, and they all turned out really good! The first show was with the Dirk Diggler band up at Cafe 27 last Thursday night. If you haven't been there, it's a real nice outdoor "biker" bar, with a cool vibe and a nice big stage to run around on. We had an early start (7-11pm) and we had a real good crowd. I have to say it's becoming one of my favorite places to play, even though I've only played there a few times. So that was gig #1. Gig #2 of the weekend was with Eli Cash on Friday night at Cutler Bay Sports Bar. Had a minor mishap with my 5 string bass, but was able to do the repair by myself and still use it. Another good show, with a pretty decent size audience. Cutler Bay is a nice place to play, and the vibe is always good. Gigs #3 and 4 were with the band Limerock, and for those shows I was playing drums! Let me rewind back a week or so and explain how those gigs happened...
The Saturday before, I got a call from Dave, who is the keyboard player for not only Limerock but DD as well. He asked if I would want to come out and play drums on a few songs, as their drummer had hurt his wrist, and could use a break in their show. I said no problem, and made my way out to Homefield where they were playing. When I got there, I saw that their drummer was playing with only one arm, as his other one was in a sling! Ouch! My helping out consisted of their drummer playing a few songs at the beginning of their sets, and then I came up and played the remainder of the sets. I have to say I had a good time. On one of the breaks, they asked me if I would be able to play with them the following (last) weekend, as he wasn't going to be healed up by then. I said, "sure!" Now, back to this last Saturday...Limerock played at Black Point Ocean Grill down in Homestead. It's an open air bar and grill on the water. I'd played there once before, but I couldn't tell you with who! I honestly don't remember, it was that long ago. Anyway, I got to get my drums out of storage and play with them! I had my kit set up like John Bonham (with the gong!), and I had a blast! There were a few moments that were hairy (I didn't get a setlist, so it was a lot of "I hope I know the song they want to play!"), but for about 98% of the show I did really well. Again, a good audience, and a couple friends of mine came out to cheer me on, which was cool. On Sunday, I was back at Cafe 27 with Limerock. We played in the afternoon, and other than the fact that it felt like it was 150 degrees outside, the performance went awesome! Again, I had a real good time up there. Was sore Sunday night and for part of Monday, but it was worth it. I heard from them on Monday night, and they may use me again this weekend for their gigs if their drummer is still not able to play. I'll let you know as soon as I know if I'm playing again. As far as known gigs this week, the Dirk Diggler band will be the host band at Little Hoolies tomorrow night. I assume we'll be hitting the stage as soon as the basketball game is over. Looking forward to that show already. The DD band is getting tighter with every show, and it seems that we already have a "buzz" around us...I'm thinking that's a good thing! After that, the next DD gig that I know about at this point is back up at Cafe 27 on July 13, hopefully there will be more gigs to be announced here very soon. There aren't any Eli Cash shows coming up for the next few weeks, and I think that band will be using the time to revamp the setlist from what the guys are saying. Looks like it will be a completely new show that next time we're out, depending on when the next show is and how much rehearsal we get in before then. So now that it's summer, it's also studio time for me! I have already started going through the bits of songs that I've been doing some recording on since last summer, and I'm picking out the ones that I think I can get finished up first. I will be laying bass and guitar parts on some stuff starting today, as well as sitting down with my lyric book to get that end of things rolling. I have some cool ideas floating around, and now I have the time to start fully fleshing them out. I have a laundry list of projects for the summer, and I'm going to see how many of them I can get done before the "day job" fires back up. In no particular order, there is a new "solo" project, a couple large scale compositions, the project with my old Inkognito bandmates, a new Conspiracy Inc. project (Tom and I agreed to start work on it today), as well as still doing shows with DD, Eli Cash, and open mic appearances at Hoolies. I'm also starting to seriously considering doing the relaunch of Force Three, but I still may wait on that. That just about covers things going on here at the moment, I'll update here and the gig calendar as soon as I kno
